A sneaker silhouette guide for everyday outfits
Use shape and purpose to choose footwear, rather than a popularity ranking.
A shoe can change the balance of an outfit even when everything else stays the same. Instead of asking which model is most talked about, look at the height of its sole, the width of its toe and how it sits beneath your usual trouser hem. Those are practical differences you can see in a mirror.
Low and slim
A flatter, narrower sneaker can sit neatly beneath straight trousers and draw less attention away from a strong jacket or colour. It may feel very different from a cushioned running-inspired shoe, so try it on for the walking you actually do. Appearance alone does not tell you how supportive a specific pair will feel.
Rounded and substantial
A thicker sole and broader shape can anchor loose trousers or a long coat. If both trouser and shoe are wide, check where the hem lands: covering the entire shoe can make the lower half look heavy. A small cuff or a different length may clarify the silhouette.
Classic court shapes
These often work as a neutral bridge between casual and cleaner clothing. Materials and colour matter: smooth leather, canvas and suede each wear and clean differently. Before paying, read the retailer’s care advice and return policy.
Our Trending Footwear gallery is a visual starting point and links outward to brand sites; it does not promise a particular model is in stock. The NZ sneaker shopping guide explains how to compare retailers. Fit and availability should be checked with the seller, especially when sizing changes across brands.
